Global Shipment Tracking System

Business Problem

International shippers struggled with fragmented tracking information from multiple carriers, lack of real-time visibility into cargo movements, and difficulties in managing customs documentation and potential delays. This led to supply chain disruptions, increased costs, and frustrated customers.

Solution

Developed a comprehensive shipment tracking system using Laravel, integrating with dozens of international shipping carriers via their APIs. Implemented real-time status updates, customs clearance tracking, document repository, and predictive delay analytics (OpenAI API). Utilized Laravel Horizon for processing large volumes of tracking events and notifications.

Architecture

Micro-service oriented architecture with Shipment Aggregator, Real-time Tracking, Customs & Documentation, Predictive Analytics (OpenAI API), and Notification Service. Employs Redis for caching shipment data and status. Uses Laravel Echo with WebSockets for real-time updates to shippers and customers. Queued jobs handle carrier API polling, data normalization, and notification delivery. Integrates with ERP and customs systems.

Challenges

Integrating and normalizing data from hundreds of disparate carrier APIs with varying data formats and update frequencies, ensuring real-time global tracking across different time zones, implementing accurate predictive delay analytics, securely managing sensitive shipping documentation, and providing a scalable architecture for millions of concurrent shipments.

Performance Optimizations

Implemented Redis for caching shipment data and carrier responses to minimize API calls and improve tracking response times, optimized database indexing for rapid shipment lookup and history, utilized Laravel Horizon for scalable processing of high-volume carrier updates and predictive analytics, and employed Vue.js for a highly interactive and responsive tracking dashboard.
