A high-performance Airline Flight Reservation System designed for airlines and travel agencies, facilitating flight search, booking, ticketing, and passenger management. Features include real-time seat availability, dynamic pricing based on demand, baggage allowance management, special service requests, and secure payment processing. The system integrates with airline inventory and departure control systems, ensuring efficient operations and a seamless booking experience for travelers while maximizing revenue for airlines.

Business Problem

Airlines faced challenges with outdated reservation systems, slow booking processes, difficulties in managing complex fare rules and inventory, and lack of real-time integration with other airline operations. This led to passenger frustration, revenue loss from inefficient pricing, and operational bottlenecks.

Solution

Developed a robust flight reservation system using Laravel, integrating with leading GDS and airline APIs for real-time data. Implemented advanced fare calculation, seat mapping, and secure payment processing (Stripe, PayPal). Utilized Laravel Horizon for high-volume booking and ticketing processes and WebSockets for real-time seat availability updates.

Architecture

Micro-service architecture with Flight Search Engine, Seat Inventory Management, Fare Calculation Service, Ticketing & E-ticket Generation, and Payment Gateway Integration. Employs Redis for caching flight schedules and availability. Uses queued jobs for PNR (Passenger Name Record) creation and notification delivery. Integrates with CRM for personalized passenger services.

Challenges

Ensuring real-time seat availability and preventing overbooking across all flight routes and classes, managing complex fare rules, restrictions, and dynamic pricing algorithms, securely processing millions of transactions globally, and integrating seamlessly with diverse airport and airline operational systems.

Performance Optimizations

Implemented Redis for caching flight search results and seat maps to accelerate response times, optimized database indexing for rapid PNR retrieval and passenger lookups, utilized Laravel Horizon for scalable processing of ticketing and ancillary service bookings, and employed event sourcing for critical booking state changes to ensure data consistency.
